New dates! We will now start October 26th and run through until November 30th
Part of the lockdown learning I did this year was taking a youth mindfulness course from an organization called Mindfulness Without Borders.
I’ve been exploring mindfulness and meditation since I took a neuroscience course in my undergrad, and I’m gravitating towards mindfulness right now because it feels like a more trauma-informed tool that I can readily integrate into both my own personal practice and the way that I support others with my teaching.
In order to complete the certification process, I’m required to get supervised practicum hours leading a six-week mindfulness program for youth. To complete this, I’m offering a free six-week Mindfulness Ambassador Program that blends mindfulness exercises with social-emotional learning.
The quick read:
This group will be 6 participants max, ages 12-16, and will take place from 4-5 on Tuesdays at Fit2Fly (457a Danforth Ave). It will start October 26th and run through until November 30th. It will be completely free, and everyone will receive a signed certificate of completion at the end (and hopefully some new mindfulness tools to support them in their day-to-day life). I am asking that participants commit to attending all of the sessions (as much as possible).
In accordance with the government mandate for non-essential services, as well as the space use guidelines at Fit2Fly, all participants will need to show proof of vaccination or a written document, completed and supplied by a physician or registered nurse in the extended class, with a medical reason for not being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the effective time period for the medical reason.
We will also be wearing masks indoors and following handwashing and physical distancing protocols as much as is possible/appropriate.
If public health measures or group comfort requires, I will move the group to an online format with respect to case numbers in Toronto and the safety of all participants.
For transparency, I’m fully vaccinated as a facilitator, and am doing at home rapid antigen testing at least twice weekly.
Fit2Fly is located at 457a Danforth Ave, on the second floor, up a flight of stairs (no elevator). There are two single-user (non-gendered) bathrooms, both without grab bars. It is a low scent space with overhead fluorescent lighting (which we will not be using). We will be working in the back studio with the door closed and the window open for airflow. The window opens onto a back alley where there are sometimes noises. Participants will be sitting on the ground on mats, pillows, or yoga blocks–chairs are also available.
As always, I will work to create a space that is actively anti-racist and trauma-informed, centering the needs of queer, trans, and disabled/neurodivergent folks, and always being open to being accountable and learning how I can do better.
